In 2018 we were presented an opportunity to purchase the plot next door to our school in Kenya. This was another ambitious project, but our GDW Family responded and we were able to make the purchase and are now able to use the plot as we had planned. Thank you so much!! This note is to provide some details of the project as well as present a few needs we are currently facing.
The first picture above shows the next door plot when we made the purchase. You can see it was a deteriorating structure and our kids often played out in front of the school.
We tore down the existing structure and used the blocks to strengthen the foundation and construct a more permanent wall. We also built a connection with stairs between the school and the new plot and placed tiles over the entire floor.
The plot is now complete and being used by the children every day. Over time we will add some more play structures, but for now this is such a wonderful blessing!
I also have a few needs I must make you aware of.
General Need:
Every year, actually throughout the year, we receive new people who support the ministry and lose others. Last year I had a donor who committed to one year at $500 per month. This came at a much needed time for the ministry. However, the year is now complete. Most of our donors are more in the range of $25 to $100 per month, so it will take several new donors to make up for this loss. Please consider becoming a monthly donor to this ministry.
Specific Needs:
We currently have three specific needs.
First, the price of food has steadily increased over the past year to the point that we were needing to reduce the serving size and were becoming concerned that the kids were not receiving enough to eat. We therefore made the decision to increase the food budget by $250 per month. We need additional funds to cover this increase.
Earlier this year we began an initiative to build a permanent library for the school. So far we have made one purchase of library type books – but it’s a start. This is more of a long term project where we can add to the books as funds are available. However, if God moves on your heart in the area of a children’s library please consider making a donation and specifying the funds to go toward the library.
Our last need is perhaps the greatest. Several years ago, I realized we would only have limited impact if we could not also help the Spiritual condition of the families. We came up with the idea of a Family Pastor whose primary responsibility was to visit and minister into the homes. We tried two different individuals without much success and so for the last year we have not had anyone in the role of Family Pastor. We really need to try again because there seems to be a dramatic increase in the number of broken homes, violence, and drugs among our families. I have instructed our Director to begin searching for an individual with a true heart for family ministry. We are praying that God would send us the right person for this job. We should be able to hire a qualified person for this position for $200 per month.
