Sherry – The Journey Begins

8/6/09, Thursday: Our journey of traveling full-time began at 11:11pm as we left our drive-way in Lorena, TX. Our first stop was to be San Antonio, TX. In the hustle and bustle of packing to leave, Steve and I never got any dinner. At midnight we stopped in Georgetown to get something to eat. Since Wendy’s was closed (go figure) there happened to be a Wal-Mart (praise God) right next door.

The girls and I went in to scavenge for something healthy to eat. We grabbed a couple of individual ready made salads, fresh Italian bread, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, Smoked Provolone Cheese, and Four Nectarines. Better than we eat at home, I must say. After taking a 30 minute break, to eat our yummy dinner, we headed down the road to S.A., TX. We arrived at Stone Creek RV Park in Schertz, TX after 3:00am (very tired and ready to get to bed).

A great big thanks to all those who came and saw us off and prayed with us in our trailer (thanks Pastor Kaul). We so appreciated it. What a blessing it is to have such sweet friends from our home church to be encouraging and praying for us.

8/7/09, Friday: We slept in a little and then went to visit friends for the day. After eating a yummy, home-made Mexican lunch (thanks Ivette C.) and catching up. Suzanne B. came over and she joined Ivette and I for a trip to Costco for my much loved Mocha Freeze.

Took pictures of all the girls (six of them) who dressed up and had a make-up session while we were away. Pictures to come later after I down load. Our three families decided to go to dinner out at Rome’s Pizza to have more visiting time and not waste time on cooking and clean-up. The sesame seed crust was a hit along with the VERY unique pizzas you can pick from.

An awesome day of visiting with some great friends came to an end with hugs and goodbyes.

Blessings,
Sherry T.

Sharing Life

The following message was written in August 2005 after returning from a visit to Africa. It’s a good reminder of the need for relational ministry, especially as our family is preparing to travel on a type of missionary journey within our own country.
*****

My daughter and I returned home from Kenya late Saturday night. During our two weeks in Kenya I preached nearly every day and often several times a day. We also had MANY opportunities to minister in smaller groups through prayer and fellowship. Everywhere we went, the children flocked to my daughter as she shared the love of Jesus in such a beautiful and natural way – I’m VERY proud of her! (The pictures are still posted on our web site.)

I spoke to many different groups, but it was clear that the Lord planned for me to primarily minister to pastors and ministry leaders. It amazes me how many doors have been opened! I spoke to several hundred pastors throughout Kenya. This is a real blessing because when we can encourage or help train a pastor we can then reach many, many more as they minister into their own community. I see this as my primary work in countries outside the USA.

One of my lasting blessings came as I ministered in a five acre refugee camp which contained 51 small mud-walled homes and over five hundred people. The food was scarce, medical almost nonexistent, and sanitation….well, not good! The conditions were so bad that several children were buried every month. And yet, when I gathered with about one hundred adults, they were praising God and sincerely thanking Him for His love, mercy, and grace. They had a faith which had been refined to the point of absolute purity. I tried to give them a message of encouragement and hope, but I pray the message they taught me will last the rest of my days.

Another lesson was more based on the entire culture rather than a single event or group. Cultures outside of our madly fast paced western societies are much more relational. Meals are NEVER hurried, and it’s impossible to stop in to say hello without having a cup of tea and an extended time of prayer and fellowship.

1 Thessalonians 2:8
“We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.”

The first “missionaries” shared the beauty of God’s love by truly loving, and they communicated His desire for an intimate Heavenly relationship through the intimacy of their earthly relationships. During this trip, God gave me some clear direction regarding how I can more effectively share the Gospel around world, but He also taught me another very important lesson about ministering by simply sharing life.

Ministry Update – Welcome Tessa Rose

The picture is my daughter-in-law and the newest Troxel – my grand daughter Tessa Rose. She is adorable and I’m looking forward to holding her in about four weeks. Her birth seemed like a good excuse for sending out a ministry update message.

We are still on schedule to hitting the road the first week in August. For those new to this ministry list, my wife and I and our two youngest children will be traveling in a travel trailer from August until Christmas. Our second stop will be in Memphis Tennessee to visit with Tessa Rose. But our first stop will be to visit our older daughters in Houston.

OK, time for a quick update on Stacey. For some this won’t mean much, but others have been following this story for many years. There may even be a few who have read about the up and down journey for the past twelve years. Stacey is now 26 years old. I wish I could paint a rosy picture but I can’t. You have faithfully prayed, and when Stacey was in prison several years ago many of you even wrote letters. Addiction is a monster, an evil tool of the enemy. And yet, God remains in control and will never leave us! So we must never give up!!

Stacey has struggled with one addiction after another, really since she was thirteen. Her latest was a pain medication drug called OxyContin. I’ll spare you some of the details but I finally had to report her. The result was 30 days in jail and then being sent to a six month rehabilitation facility in Houston. She just finished her 40th day of this program. Her time is going very well and last week she even thanked me for reporting her – said I saved her life. There are many praises in this story right now, but the real test will come when she is released. Please pray that she develops the necessary tools and is empowered by the Holy Spirit. Our other daughter just moved to Houston with her husband so we will see both girls before heading north.

Many people have asked what we will be doing while we travel. Some have even questioned our wisdom, thinking we ought to give our children a more “normal” life. But it’s a good question – what ARE we doing?

Since I began this ministry thirteen year ago, the defining verses have been Mark 12:30 and Romans 12:1. When you study these verses you will see the call to love God by giving Him ALL of your life in worship. The rest of our life ought to be lived from the overflow of our love for God. So here’s the challenge. If we know that this should be the priority of life, what do we do when, one day, we discover our life does not line up with God’s priority? I had become extremely busy in our church with doing things for God but in the process had become terribly disconnected from God…and from my family. So what would you do?

Not everyone can pack up and leave town in a trailer, but everyone can do something! If you find that your life priority is out of alignment with God’s priority then take a step – even if it is a small step – to get back to where God wants you to be. Nothing is more important than our relationship with God, and after our heavenly relationship nothing is more important than the relationship with our family…nothing!

What am I going to do? I’m going to work on my two most important relationships. After that, I’m going to continue this internet/email ministry, and try to get this message of priorities out in as many forms as possible. I plan to share the journey with whoever will listen.

Please continue to lift us up in prayer. We are doing pretty good with our stress level but there is still much to do. I’m a little concerned about finances. Our donations are slightly down and our expenses are slightly up – not a great combination. Donations can still be made to the address on the bottom of every message. You might also consider the credit card or PayPal links at: http://www.gdwm.org/index.php/support/ This link also allows you to make regular scheduled donations – regular donations are an awesome encouragement!

I believe we have an important message. The regular devotional messages teach God’s truth about His love and faithfulness as well as our response before a holy God. And the additional messages I will be able to share through our travel experience will communicate in a very real manner our call to follow boldly and establish priorities in line with His priorities. God has given this ministry a large platform to reach people all over the world and I would ask that you consider how you might be able to help.

This is longer than the normal messages so I thank you for taking the time to read. Today was a good day. Today a new life came into the world – welcome Tessa Rose!
